Cops 'Prison' Break Out

Three teams of Essex Police staff were celebrating last week after escaping from ‘jail’ and getting away as far as Rome, Inveraray and Cambridge, while raising money for charity along the way.

The teams took part in Colchester Charity Jailbreak on April 19 – an event where participants have 24-hours to get as far away as possible without spending a penny of their own money.

Essex Police human resources officer, Claire Walters and NHS human resources officer Stacey Owen ‘escaped’ to Rome after being donated two return flights by travel agents, Colchester Travel, and raised around £500 for the Essex Autistic Society.

Claire said: “We got on an Easyjet flight to Rome Ciampino airport and were kindly donated two transfers from the airport to the Rome train station by one of the air stewardesses. Unfortunately we only had an hour and a half between our arrival and our check in time to return home so we did not make it to any of the famous landmarks – although we did manage to fit in a glass of wine!”

Police community support officers (PCSOs) Clair McWilliams and Red Leeson raised around £400 for Diabetes UK and made it as far as Inveraray, Scotland. The pair managed to ‘blag’ five trains and a bus to get to the Scottish town and spent the night by themselves in a haunted prison, famous for housing spooks and paranormal groups investigating it.

Red said: “The guard showed us around and then locked us in, telling us ‘See you in the morning!’ We had access to the cells, torture room and courtyard and did a little ghost hunt of our own in the dark before settling down for the night in a haunted cell. It was the most uncomfortable night I have ever spent on a cold hard floor and to make matters worse we kept hearing rattling chains and keys and tapping on the windows! I was so scared I couldn’t move! But it was worth every minute – we raised a lot of money for charity and we can’t wait for next year.”

Sarah Faull and Carly Dereka, communication officers, raised money for The Essex Autistic Society and have raised over £500 between them. Final positions will be announced to the teams on May 1 at the prize giving ceremony at the Castle Pub on Colchester High Street.
