US Cop Visits Essex Counterparts

An American police officer is visiting Essex Police this week to explore the differences between the two styles of policing in Essex and Ohio.

Officer Brian Smith, from Columbus, is spending several days with Essex Police following a conversation he had with one of his senior officers where they thought it would be a good idea to get a different perspective on policing. He went on the internet, researched different forces in England and applied online to Essex Police.

Officer Smith said: “I decided to apply to the police in Essex because I wanted to see some real policing and not do the obvious and go to London. I thought the policing in London would be much more tourist based and wouldn’t be a true reflection of English policing. I wanted to go out into more rural areas to see what really goes on in England and to get a feel of what policing is like over here.

"I think one of the biggest differences will be that police officers in America are armed which is much rarer over here.

"The crime rate from my town is also a lot higher than those in Essex and it will be interesting to see what the main differences are. We have a lot of armed robberies and general thefts and I am interested to see what the main crimes are in Essex and how they are dealt with.”

Officer Smith also took the time to meet with Assistant Chief Constable Derek Benson to exchange one of his Ohio Police badges for an Essex Police helmet, and to talk about the two styles of policing.
