When Bradley Cox became a Scout leader with the 4th Canvey Island Scout group 29 years ago, little did he realise how much he would achieve and for how long. Now, in recognition of almost three decades of his service to the Scout Association, he has been presented with a top honour – the Silver Acorn.
A member of Tilbury Neighbourhood Policing Team, Pc Cox has been serving the Scouting movement for longer than he has been with Essex Police, which he joined 27 years ago. He was presented with his Silver Acorn – for more than 20 years of specially distinguished service – at the district’s annual Renewal of Promise ceremony on April 27 by Essex County Commissioner Bob Bye.
Pc Cox said afterwards: “I was very proud to receive the Silver Acorn – it was a complete surprise. I have been with the Scouts for 29 years and it would be very difficult to leave now. It is a hobby but it is also a way of life and it is lots of fun.”
As well as the Silver Acorn, Pc Cox was given the Medal of Merit in 1992 for outstanding service. He became Scout Leader of the troop in the mid 1990s and in recent years he has taken on increased district responsibilities – he is ‘Nights Away’ Camping Advisor for the Castle Point groups and an assessor for the county’s water activities.
Last year, in a Castle Point District Scout Council initiative, Pc Cox was project leader for the Party in the Park gala as part of the Scouting movement’s centenary celebrations. Featuring a concert by Essex Police Band, it enabled a £2,000 cheque to be presented to the Havens Hospice.
Pc Cox has also spearheaded his group’s development, building up a supporters’ network, increasing membership and sourcing fundraising projects, sponsorship and a National Lottery grant. Now, the 4th Canvey Island Sea Scout group has 150 Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers who meet weekly and, in November 2006, Chief Constable Roger Baker was present when the group’s new £400,000 centre was opened – after ten years of fundraising. The group has also re-equipped its boating fleet and become RN96, 4th Canvey – it is in the top five of the 100 Scout groups granted Royal Navy recognition.
